Hailing from an unknown world, Alam was discovered to be Force-sensitive by his family, so they sent him to the Jedi Temple on the Republic's capital planet of Coruscant. After passing his Trials of Knighthood, Alam attained the rank of Jedi Knight. In 25 BBY, Syk had come to be known as one of the foremost security experts at the Temple. During that year, Syk was contacted by Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi regarding the alleged kidnapping of Gillam Tarturi, the son of Senator Berm Tarturi. Reviewing the security holos from the evening of the crime, neither Kenobi or Syk had any luck finding anything out of the ordinary with the seemingly inconclusive tapes. Later, Kenobi asked Syk to trace the comlink signal of his friend, the Senate aide Tyro Caladian, back to its source, leading the Jedi to Senator Sano Sauro, the man who had bugged Caladian's communication equipment.
When the Clone Wars erupted across the galaxy between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Alam remained at the Temple and continued his duty as a security expert rather than serving as a General of the Grand Army of the Republic. In 19 BBY, near the end of the war, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, who was secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious that the Jedi have been searching for, enacted Order 66, a mandate that all Republic clone troopers across the galaxy had been conditioned to follow without question since before the Clone Wars had broken out. After the confrontation at the Chancellor's Suite, which resulted the death of Master of the Order Mace Windu, Darth Vader led the 501st Legion to lay siege on the Jedi Temple and eliminate all the Jedi inside. Defending the temple, Alam was slain in the massacre which led to the beginning of the Great Jedi Purge.
